character info.
character name: Damon Salvatore
canon & medium: Vampire Diaries (the books)
age & species: 500-ish, vampire
appearance: Damon was twenty years old when he was made into a vampire. That was back in the early 1500s, in Florence, Italy. He is an average height, perhaps leaning slightly to the shorter side, with short black hair that reflects rainbow colored lights in it, like a crow’s feather. His eyes are black and fathomless. When he walks, it’s with a sensual grace that he possessed long before becoming a vampire. His facial features are like something out of a Botticelli work of art; pale, smooth, and utterly flawless.
previous rpg memories: Damon spent several months living in a tiny universe known as Rowan. He was very detached from the warring nations vying for the aid of people like himself, from other worlds. Of the other travelers, he was close only to a teenage girl named Bonnie, who was the best friend of his greatest love, Elena Gilbert. Damon developed a fondness for Bonnie, at first as some sort of pet and later as a friend. When she was injured, he attempted to save her life by giving her some of his blood. This turned her into a vampire and he took responsibility for teaching her to use her abilities and hide her nature from everyone else.
timeline: Damon is yoinked from in between the third and fourth books of the Vampire Diaries series.
background/history link: http://wiki.vampire-diaries.net/Damon_Salvatore_%28Book%29
personality: Following his disastrous relationship with Katherine, Damon has dedicated his life to never appearing weak or vulnerable. The loss was simply too much to deal with and too far out of his control. Now he must always be in control, always be in the know. This has led him to develop something of a mercurial demeanor. He puts on a front of loving everything about being a vampire and often acts under this front to taunt those he considers capable of getting underneath the surface to his more vulnerable side. His favorite victim, of course, is his brother Stefan. Since becoming a vampire, Damon has struggled with everything inside of him to be what Stefan is not. And Stefan has likewise agreed to this unspoken contract, dedicating his life to being the opposite of Damon.
Damon is outwardly vain and egotistical and slightly egocentric as well, while inside he remains quite insecure. Generally, his relationships are temporary, a fact which he will never admit bothers him somewhat. The truth is that Damon is an unbearably lonely individual, but he will not allow himself to get close to many people, for fear of exposing all of the hurt inside. The fact that Stefan is the only permanent thing in his life has only recently occurred to him. For this reason, he’s decided that blood indeed runs deep. While he may not like Stefan much, he does, deep down, love him.
To avoid experiencing pain, Damon's relationships with mortals are intentionally kept short. Although he claims to enjoy killing, Damon generally prefers to feed and wipe his victim’s memories afterward. In fact, Damon almost never takes a life, unless it is out of self defense. He has a great fondness for blond girls, owing to both Katherine and Elena, and has spent much of the last five hundred years or so chasing after them, playing with them, feeding off of them, and sometimes sleeping with them. When interacting with other immortals, Damon likes to be the superior, but fully understands that with age, comes power. He is never respectful, but he will back down from a fight he knows he can’t win.
abilities:
Powers: Vampire powers in LJ Smith’s world are tied into blood. What the vampire feeds off of reflects his or her strength. A vampire who feeds off of animals has far weaker powers than a vampire who feeds off of people.
Vampires in the Smith Universe possess the following abilities, to varying degrees of strength: The ability to alter prey’s memories, high levels of celerity, a keen sense of hearing, immortality, incredible strength, the ability to turn into animals (usually birds), and some really dangerously sharp teeth.
Vampires in the Smith Universe possess the following weaknesses, to varying degrees in a trade off with levels of power: The inability to exist in sunlight without a protective charm made of lapis lazuli, an aversion to fire, injury from wood, and (in cases of extremely powerful vampires) the inability to cross running water. Vampires must also be invited into a private residence once.
Given Damon’s general diet, his abilities are limited to alacrity, mind control, the ability to turn into a crow, and a superior sense of hearing. He is able to cross running water without any problems.
As far as his list of mortal abilities is concerned, Damon is an excellent fencer, but he considers his primarily superpower to be his way with women. Damon is a flirt and even without using his vampiric, mind altering abilities, he's still very good at charming the ladies. Aside from that, his only other mortal ability of note is his razor sharp use of sarcasm, generally at the least appropriate moments.
any plans for your character here? Nope.
possessions: Damon's most treasured possession is his ring of lapis lazuli. Not only does it protect him from sunlight, but it is also a link to his past, as it was given to him by Katherine.
samples.
sample journal entry: A diary? Are you kidding me? Who do you think I am? Stefan? “Uh…dear diary, I’m so sad because I’m an evil vampire and I have a bad haircut. I wish my brother would stop being so evil. I’m all tortured and conflicted.” If only he would put that broody power to some good use. He’d get a lot more girls that way.
third-person sample: It was late at night. The museum was long closed, the hallway deserted. One weird amorphous shadow fell across the floor. This was perfect for Damon. He knew little poetry, but he could appreciate how romantic it was. How Anne Rice it was. There he stood, behind a hideous, ancient statue, the cute blond girl in his arms, her head lolled off to one side. And of course, the inevitable footsteps coming down the hallway. Well, every Anne Rice story had its party pooper.
“Not again,” he heard Stefan mutter. Was he expected to respond? Oops, it seemed he hadn’t heard after all. Then, louder, “Damon!”
Damon looked up at Stefan, still biting the girl. Oh Stefan, how predictable he was, standing there. The indignant face, one of Damon’s favorites. No one could bring that out of Stefan better than Damon could. “What?” he mumbled, the warm, sticky blood sliding down his throat.
“Public place?” Stefan indicated the hallways, full only of motionless sculptures.
Damon reluctantly disengaged from the girl’s throat, raising an eyebrow. The boy never learned. “Where are my manners? You want some?” He didn’t wait for a response. “No?” And he went back to feeding. Truth to tell, he wasn’t hungry anymore. The girl’s blood had a funny taste and it wasn’t a bit satisfying. But annoying Stefan was always satisfying.
Stefan took a few tentative steps toward Damon. “Manners? Don’t you know not to talk with your mouth full?”
“I missed that issue of Dear Abby,” he said between mouthfuls.
Stefan grabbed the girl. Damon rolled his eyes, stepping back to watch. He could have stopped Stefan, of course. Not only was he stronger, but he had just fed. It was hardly worth the effort. Turning her to face him, Stefan stared into her eyes. “Forget what just happened and go home.” As always, the girl smiled, stupidly, and walked away.
He waited until her footsteps were gone. “Dick move, dude. I wasn’t finished with that,” he said sarcastically.
Stefan shook his head, muttering, “I hate you.”
Damon spread his arms wide, smiling in mock sincerity. “You love me, Stef.” The quip didn’t come with the same relative ease as it once had. Somehow, the word ‘love’ wasn’t something he enjoyed throwing around anymore.
“No. I wish I could kill you,” Stefan deadpanned.
They both knew he never would. “Been there. Done that. Get over it.” If there wasn’t going to be any killing, at least there ought to be some fun. Damon spun in a wide, lazy circle, waiting until he was certain that Stefan’s nerves were completely on end before kicking over the nearest statue.
Stefan rushed in front of the statue, grabbing it before it could smash on the marble floor. “Careful.”
Damon had already walked over to another statue. This was a woman, a beautiful woman. He stared at her for a moment. There was something about her that bothered him. The curl of her lip, a little smile that seemed to say trouble. Normally, he liked that look. But she was taunting him. Damon didn’t tolerate taunting. He took a Sharpie out of the pocket of his favorite leather jacket, pulling the cap off with his teeth. “What do you think the Romans had against facial hair?” he asked, poising the tip of his marker over the statue’s lip.
With celerity Stefan righted the first statue and ran over to catch Damon’s wrist. His grip was weak to Damon, obviously the mark of a vampire who enjoyed eating Bambi and Thumper. “The men didn’t mind it. The women a little more so. Especially not on Helen of Troy.”
